How Christmas can inspire your next Artificer

First appearing to the mass market fanbase within 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons in Eberron: Rising from the Last War and now in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, the Artificer is a kind of techno-wizard. For someone without previous connections to Eberron, the setting that exploded on the scene in 3rd edition, the Artificer confused me.

The fiction upon which it is based seemingly is all self-referring, or modern fantastical. There’s a subclass that essentially reads as if it is Iron Man ported back into D&D for example. Whereas most D&D classes stretch into the myths and legends that predate the game itself, the Artificer does not seem to have that convention.

Oddly enough, it was a Christmas movie that reminded me of Artificers within our lore. There are magical techno-wizards within holiday tales. From Christmas elves of tradition, to the inventors of Jingle Jangle, you can find your inspiration for your next Artificer.

These creators take the mundane and imbue it with magic. They create automatons, magically tinker, infuse items, and all the other things you expect from the description of an Artificer.

Masters of invention, artificers use ingenuity and magic to unlock extraordinary capabilities in objects. They see magic as a complex system waiting to be decoded and then harnessed in their spells and inventions. You can find everything you need to play one of these inventors in the next few sections.

Artificers use a variety of tools to channel their arcane power. To cast a spell, an artificer might use alchemist’s supplies to create a potent elixir, calligrapher’s supplies to inscribe a sigil of power, or tinker’s tools to craft a temporary charm. The magic of artificers is tied to their tools and their talents, and few other characters can produce the right tool for a job as well as an artificer.

Opening up a vision of an Artificer to include these amazing gift-gives also helps change how you approach D&D. A character of kindness and generosity, or that thieving Gustafson, expands the stories you can tell. When you visit the village you can brighten the spirits of the community via your infusions and spells.

It may be a Hallmark/Lifetime/FreeForm/UPTv cliche, but there is magic in the holiday season. Incorporating the magic of elves, toys, inventors, Santa, and others into your D&D characters and stories means adding more joy to a game that so often centers violence.

Generosity and joy exist in D&D (even in Barovia). Your Artificer has the power to amplify those feelings (while also being an effective combatant, but there are many places that talk about optimizing in those ways). There are 1,000 times a thousand stories available at any table and any session. Adding a little Christmas to your Artificer is a way to discover more of them.

Be Jeronicus, Jessica, Journey, or even Gustafson. Be Alabaster Snowball, Bushy Evergreen, Pepper Minstix, Shinny Upatree, Sugarplum Mary, or Wunorse Openslae. Roll dice and tell stories about the power of Artifice.

Lore Collage: Will Rich Delia re-join Daley & Goldstein in the D&D movie, 25 other links to read-watch-listen

At this point the amount of Dungeons & Dragons movie news coming out might need it gets its own mini-collage every week. With the move from pre-production to actual filming you should expect a flood of actor announcements and leaks. There are no secrets in Hollywood.

This week’s Lore Collage is heavy on inspiration and I would love to know what direction you are taking those little seeds.

Supposedly Chris Pine is playing a human named Edgin in the D&D movie. Expectations are that the casting director will be Rich Delia, who worked with directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein on Game Night. Delia’s genre credentials include The Curse of la Llorona, Shazam!, Brightburn, Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, Stargirl, as well as upcoming projects like Mortal Kombat, King Richard, Black Adam and The Flash.

According to Newsweek, Heroes’ Feast was the best selling cookbook of 2020 (up to Dec 2) and the 3rd best selling How To/Advice book this year. Yes, you read that right, a D&D food book outsold an HGTV star and Food Network’s Barefoot Contessa

When the Bad Guys Win, this month’s blog carnival is all about villains and what to do when heroes lose.

Your gameworld should have fast food. Walkup and cart-based food vendors were common prior to the modern era. Embrace that. In Pompeii hot food was lowered, bowl and all, into the stonework counters of their walkup restaurants.

Ramps that ease access for the disabled are not a 20th century invention. Your worlds should include these too. Be more like the Greeks.

Lox is the oldest English word that has kept both meaning and pronunciation. That let’s us know that the proto-English speakers came from a place where salmon was a regular dish.

Your next underwater adventure better include a punchy octopus.

  • Merry Christmas and Joyous New Year

Merry Christmas and Joyous New Year

Back when I ran SounderAtHeart.com I wrote most, maybe all?, of the holiday messages. Usually they tended to focus on the purpose of the day. Now, with a slightly different audience, that continues.

One of the lessons of 2020 is that the search for joy can be difficult. For the most part we are separated from the friends and family that make life so awesome. Our D&D tables are now virtual, losing some of that companionship that is at the core of the game. They’re also harder to schedule, because even though we are home more frequently, some people have bandwidth or computer limitations, others just need to not go from bad screen to good screen because it ruins the good screen.

This is probably why lonely play and online conversation about the game is expanding. When I can’t find a table I do a lot more thinking about my setting, how to expand story via mechanics, and ideation about how my mundane life can grow into fantastic tales. [This is me thinking aloud, and quite possibly not a normal holiday letter]

Christmas in 2020 is going to stretch for a few more weeks because of the way shipping is overwhelmed, both intentionally and not. This will be wonderful for all of us. It means little sprinkles of holiday cheer will appear over many more days.

Rather than concentrate on how the shipping delays damage Christmas, please consider them an extension of joy and that we are all “Simply having a wonderful Christmastime” that lasts long enough to lessen the pains of 2020.

I wish all who read my little corner of the internet a Merry Christmas, a Happy Yuletide, and a Joyous New Year.

Sometimes our Christmas Tree is decorated with the Christmas cards people send.

Below I’ve added the nearly-annual letter we send out to friends and family. If you’d like a letter in the future hit me up via email or Direct Message.

    Hello friends and family,

When 2020 started we thought we’d spend more time seeing you. There were weddings, reunions, road trips, and more that were planned. Dave was supposed to return to work in baseball with Tacoma Rainiers while continuing his work with Tacoma Defiance. Kristin continued her real estate journey – prepared for a year of home market valuations and open houses.

Then, well, everything that made 2020, twenty-twenty, happened.

The biggest beneficiaries of this year have been Aslan, Remi, and Luca – they’re getting more walks, pets, care, and love than ever before.

Dave re-launched his personal website (FullMoonStorytelling.com) mostly focusing on short fiction and gaming, with a sprinkle of soccer appearing on occasion.

In between helping clients buy/sell homes, Kristin has been reworking the space in our spare bedroom to make it more usable as a home office while also organizing various closets and cabinets in our home. Please keep her in mind for anyone you know who is looking to buy or sell in the greater Seattle area (or as a referring agent elsewhere.)

Together, we’ve purged a bunch of clutter from our lives, discovered new recipes, and learned to appreciate the little things in life more than ever.

Like you, we are looking forward to 2021 – a year of good health and good memories. One of the strongest lessons of this year is that we’re not going to wait to do things. When it’s practical and safe again, we’re going spend time with friends & family that have only been present digitally for too long.

    With Love & Hope
